Hluhuwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve Photos

The small Zulu village at the entrance of the Reserve is just indicative of the much larger government built modern developments. The small village shows the circular buildings that do appear within the more modern developments. These buildings are used as a kind of household chapel, and most homes or groups of homes have such structure.

Within the park we saw many up close groupings of the large animals including white rhinos ("white" for wide mouths, not for the color of the animals as white and black rhinos are otherwise similar). One rhino came out of the bush essentially towards us. It was very close when it appeared, and we backed up slowly to let it pass in front of us as it headed to its nearby watering hole. There were also quite a few unusual birds, notably the hammerkopf and the strange yellow weaver birds that weave their nests upside down. It was fun having our picture taken at the same spot where the picture at the end of this set of blogs was taken in 2001.

Unlike 11 years ago when the "safari" was taken in closed Land Rovers, this time converted open air pick up trucks were used. The Germans took the front and window seats. We always went to the back for better views to the back anyway. The English just said, "That's all right" and slumped down in their seats, but a good time was really had by all.
